About LivingMyCulture.ca / LivingMyCulture.ca : presentation

LivingMyCulture.ca is an initiative of the Canadian Virtual Hospice and more than 70 partners. LivingMyCulture.ca includes content developed from three projects funded by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. Launched in 2016, The Living My Culture project engaged people from 8 cultures to share their stories about the intersection of culture and advanced illness, end-of-life and grief. The Indigenous Voices: Stories of Serious Illness and Grief project interviewed First Nations, Inuit and Métis about experiences, lessons learned and words of wisdom about living with advanced illness, dying and grief for those travelling a similar path.

In 2020, Indigenous Voices Phase Two launched Coming Full Circle, a booklet to guide decisions and discussions on wishes, values, and beliefs about care at the end of life. In fall of 2020, interviews with 50 First Nations, Inuit and Métis will be available as well as a series of cultural competency learning modules for healthcare providers caring for Indigenous People at end of life. We are grateful to, and humbled by, the courageous people who shared their stories for the benefit of others.

In 2024, the Canadian Virtual Hospice launched a new project called Indigenous Voices 3: Supporting Healthy Ways of Living Through Grief and Loss. This initiative was created in response to the need for grief support that respects and reflects First Nations, Inuit, and Métis unique cultures, traditions, and histories. The project began with a national webinar series hosted by members of the Elders and Knowledge Carriers Circle convened by CVH and led by Dr. Holly Prince. In 2026, the project shared over 290 storytelling videos where members of the Circle share sacred ceremonies, cultural knowledge, and personal teachings on how to navigate grief. Additionally, three resource guides were written specifically for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis community members, as well as a companion guide designed to help both Indigenous and non-Indigenous health and social care providers offer more respectful, trauma-informed care. These tools are designed for a wide audience, from Indigenous community members and leaders looking for cultural comfort to healthcare providers and policymakers who design medical and end-of-life care systems. They are also available to any member of the general public who simply wants to learn about and respect Indigenous approaches to healing. We continue to be grateful for the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis partners who have supported this project.
